Entrance.
Octagon-shaped house on the left, hence, the name |
 |
Yes, apparently the
place is seriously haunted. I spoke with the
curator. He said he has seen apparitions and
heard voices, himself. PBS recently did a
special about it. A paranormal investigation
crew spent the night and collected their own
evidence. |

Circle of trees is
the slave cemetery |
 |
Dono Langley (slave
hunter), Quentin Hollis (slave), Bill Harle
(plantation owner), SB (slave hunter). Dono is
a real estate investor. Quentin played pro
b-ball in China and is now a psychology prof at WKU.
Bill is a comm prof in Murray, KY. SB ... well
... a faux Indiana Jones?? |

hunters |
 |
... Danged gophers! |

Discussing the scene
in the slave cemetery w/ director Ron DeMarse (far
right) |
 |
SB on break, trying
to break in a new corn cob pipe. Yuck!
After nearly burning my tongue off, we ended up not using the
pipe. LOL |
 |
Quentin exiting the
field into the woods |
 |
Not that Quentin
wasn't working up a sweat, but it was a cool day for
July, and he had to look really sweaty. |
 |
Quentin backing down
a path, unaware that a slave hunter is about to
knock him out with a rifle butt. |
 |
The swing had to be
close to look realistic. Thankfully, I never
actually hit Quentin. |
 |
Shooting the scene
again from the POV of the camera. Thankfully
again, I didn't hit the camera and end the movie! Found a tick
on my pants at the end of this scene. Argh. |
 |
A little break after
that scene |
 |
Lighting the barn.
Two generators were placed far away. |
 |
Rehearsing the scene
where the plantation owner makes Quentin think his
foot is going to be chopped off for trying to run
away. His shoes were off for the actual shot. |
 |
Folks on break.
It was a lonnnnng day--13 hours--beginning at 7am. |
 |
The two slave
hunters bring the slave into the barn for the
plantation owner. |
 |
Poor Quentin had to
be thrown down so many times. :-(
We tried to collect a little pile of straw to soften
his landing, but .... |
 |
Slave hunter SB had
to kick Quentin in the ribs after throwing him down. |
 |
When the plantation
owner said to revive him, next came a bucket of
cold water. |
 |
Shot of Quentin.
He had returned from a b-ball camp in China only the
day before. Talk about jet lag! Next, a
camp in Kenya only days later. |

This is one
beautiful area ... so serene. |
 |
Cat begins the
slave-hunter makeup. Dono and I were to have a
"cadaverish" look because we are
ghosts from the past. |

 |
Reorganizing for the
next shot |
 |
Hmm ... Chinese! |
 |
... Hangin' over the
edge of a cliff. THAT can't have a happy
ending. |
 |
Cat working on that
"impaled" look. |
 |
This place seemed to
be a poison ivy farm. The stuff was
everywhere. |
 |
|

|
 |
Dono and SB were on
top of the cliff, looking down below for an escaped
slave. |

Back to the Octagon
Hall for the final shoot |
 |
... ONE use for a
ladder |
 |
A little levity
before the filming begins. Bill's family
history says that Teddy Roosevelt once owned that
shotgun. And it has a golden R inlaid into the
wooden stock. |
